Phase 1
Phase 2-early 2006 Phase 2-late 2006 Phase 2-late 2006
PHASE 1: MAY 10, 2005
STATUS: COMPLETE, SITE BEING MONITORED
Area to be burned: The North side of the Arboretum; 26 acres (outlined in yellow).
Reason for burn: Restore natural fire regime in areas that depend on fire for ecosystem diversity and health.
Vegetation on burn site: The site contains a mixture of shrub, saw palmetto, and pine trees.
Site history: This site was burned around 10 years ago along with the parcel to the east. The southern face is bordered by a dirt road followed by Creole Pond, where the north side has a fire break/hiking trail boundary. The western line has no pre-existing boundary, but a fire break was installed to prevent the fire from jumping to surrounding parcels.
Prescription: The Nature Conservancy was contracted to write the burn plans for the April burn.
PHASE
2: EARLY 2006
STATUS: PLANNING, PRE-SITE MONITORING
Area to be burned: 3 units; one on the east side of Gemini Blvd. and two on the west side.
Reason for burn: Reduction of fuel load, habitat restoration, and for prescribed fire research.
Vegetation on the site: The sites are mostly scrub with hardwood encroachment occurring.
Site History: The sites have never be burned by UCF. The east side of one of the units shares a fire break with the first burn unit (photo above).
Prescription: The prescription will be prepared by the UCF Prescribed Fire Coordinator and Burn Boss. Click here to view the Phase 2 prescription (Adobe Acrobat format).
